In an Attempt to Reduce Power Consumption and Increase Solar Integration, Dubai Implements Bold Green Building Initiatives

In a bold step towards enhancing sustainability and energy efficiency, Dubai has ramped up initiatives to upgrade more than 9,000 government structures, considerably cutting down on electricity and water usage. The 89th meeting of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, led virtually by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Council and MD & CEO of DEWA, assessed current strategies aimed at promoting Dubai’s transition to green building practices.

The meeting included senior officials, such as HE Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, the Secretary General of the Council, along with board members from prominent organizations like Dubai Municipality, ENOC, EGA, DUSUP, and RTA. The discussion centered on assessing the advancements made in relation to the Dubai Demand Side Management Strategy 2050, which aims to cut energy and water usage by 30% by 2030 and 50% by 2050.

HE Al Tayer highlighted that the initiatives of the council align with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. “By implementing Etihad ESCO’s retrofitting projects, we are turning Dubai’s government facilities into exemplary models of energy efficiency and operational excellence. These initiatives also aid in incorporating solar energy into public infrastructure, which further enhances our pursuit of carbon neutrality,” Al Tayer stated.

Etihad Energy Services Company remains essential by offering comprehensive consumption information and retrofit solutions that enhance energy efficiency in current infrastructures. The council noted notable advancements in energy efficiency as a result of these upgrades, which also included the integration of solar energy technologies.

HE Al Muhairbi pointed out the advancements in building regulations over the last ten years aimed at facilitating solar integration and environmentally friendly design. “These modifications have not only aided in producing cleaner electricity but have also promoted the use of solar panels in government structures, guaranteeing long-term sustainability and decreasing reliance on traditional energy sources,” he stated.

Dubai’s emphasis on lowering emissions and enhancing the use of renewable energy positions it as a leader among global cities in innovative climate-aware urban development.
