Dubai has taken a major step toward sustainable transport with the launch of Roads and Transport Authority’s new fleet of Zhongtong Bus electric buses, capable of running up to 280 km on a single charge. This initiative is part of a broader 735-bus procurement plan, including 40 electric units, marking one of the largest electric public bus deployments in the UAE and reinforcing Dubai’s commitment to green mobility.
At the core of this rollout is a 12-metre Zhongtong electric bus, specifically designed to operate efficiently in Dubai’s demanding climate. Powered by a high-capacity 434 kWh battery and supported by 360 kW fast-charging systems, these buses can complete full-day urban routes without requiring mid-day charging. This extended range represents a significant advancement in electric transport within the region.
The deployment aligns with Dubai’s long-term sustainability vision under the Zero-Emission Public Transport Strategy 2050, which aims to transition all public buses, taxis, and limousine services to electric or hydrogen power. According to Mattar Al Tayer, the gradual expansion of electric buses will play a crucial role in achieving the emirate’s climate goals and reducing its overall carbon footprint.
Beyond sustainability, the new buses offer enhanced passenger experience and safety features, including low-floor access for people with disabilities, dedicated family seating, Wi-Fi connectivity, and mobile charging ports. Advanced technologies such as 360-degree surveillance, driver monitoring systems, and automated passenger counting further highlight Dubai’s push to create a smarter, safer, and more efficient public transport network.
